My name is Marilyn Baker, and I have horrible allergies. I’m 42 years old and have been suffering from allergies since I was a child. I have seasonal and environmental allergies. Allergies plague me year round. When I was young, my parents even moved to a dryer area in the hope of helping me. Over the past eight years, I have done extensive research both through doctors and online. I have managed to come up with some combinations that have helped me a great deal. Insomnia occurs when children have problems sleeping at night. Oftentimes, they wake up earlier than normal in the morning. Older children might notice this on their own, while the parents of younger children are the ones who catch it. If you are struggling trying to figure out what might be going on with your little one, take a look at the common reasons why children suffer from insomnia and what you can do to help them overcome it.

Causes of Insomnia

Children can suffer from stress just like adults can. Pay attention to what your child has going on in their life. You want them to talk with you and discuss what they have going on at school and in their personal life. You might not realize just how much your child has going on and how much they are dealing with at any point in time.

Certain medications can cause children to struggle with being able to sleep. If your child is taking medication to treat ADHD or an anticonvulsant or antidepressant, check with a professional pediatrician, like Paul Bloom, to see if that might be to blame.

Many children love the taste of soda pop. However, soda pop that is loaded with caffeine is bad for your little one. It can cause them to have problems sleeping. Caffeine is a stimulant, so you are better off giving your child a healthier alternative when possible.

Treating Insomnia

Give children a comfortable place to sleep. Bedrooms should be quiet, dark and comfortable. At night, your home should be calm, quiet and relaxed. Avoid getting into an argument or disagreement before they go to bed, as that is going to cause anxiety and stress.

Take the clocks out of their bedroom. You don't want your child staring at the clocks while they are trying to sleep. Clock watching causes anxiety, which makes it more difficult for your child to fall asleep.

Teach your child how to relax. Taking deep breaths as they lay in bed can help to calm them down and help them to fall asleep. Imagining a peaceful sunset or cool mountain breeze can help children to sleep peacefully through the night.

While you might not think that your child is under a lot of stress, it might surprise you just how much they are going through at any point in time. Spend time talking with your children and helping them get through a difficult time in life. Be sure to check their medications, avoid unhealthy foods with stimulants like soda pop, and help your child sleep by giving by creating a relaxed night-time environment.
