About Me

Allergies: The Unbearable Sniffing, Sneezing and Drainage

My name is Marilyn Baker, and I have horrible allergies. I’m 42 years old and have been suffering from allergies since I was a child. I have seasonal and environmental allergies. Allergies plague me year round. When I was young, my parents even moved to a dryer area in the hope of helping me. Over the past eight years, I have done extensive research both through doctors and online. I have managed to come up with some combinations that have helped me a great deal. My allergies aren’t gone, but they have become manageable. I do have to have allergy shots, but I also use some natural remedies. I am happy to be able to share my findings with you here on my blog. I hope you can find some of this of value.

Allergies: The Unbearable Sniffing, Sneezing and Drainage

Self-Care Is Important If You Have A Helping Personality

by Clifton Davidson

Some people are always available should someone need help. Whether they are at work or just hanging out in their neighborhood, they don't wait for people to ask for help. They step up and offer what they can. If you are one of these helper-types, you need to take care of yourself, too. Well thought out self-care is important to keep your mind and body focused and rejuvenated.

Choosing the Right Self-Care Approach

One characteristic of this personality is that they often do not ask for something for themselves. As part of your self-care, find an activity where you are the beneficiary. It could be something that someone else does for you, such as a massage, or an experience that is all yours, such as a walk along a mountain path. Part of the rejuvenation process is receiving something that is important to you. Here are some ideas to start you thinking about what self-care activities would be most effective for you.

Massage Therapy

This is one way to get overall relaxation of your mind and body. There are a number of types of massage so try several before settling on any one. Swedish massage is the most common style you'll find, but there are a number of others including:

  • Hot stone massage which uses smooth, heated rocks placed on parts of your body
  • Hawaiian Lomilomi which is a gentle, meditative type of massage
  • Craniosacral which focuses on your head, neck, spine and pelvis
  • Hydrotherapy massage which is massage given while you're in a heated tank or pool

Massage is a good self-care option because it forces you to take time out for yourself.

Acupuncture

This Chinese medicine technique is used for a number of medical issues, but it is also effective at reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Find an acupuncture practitioner that focuses on the relaxation benefits to see if this approach works for you. They will often work in a quiet room with a comfortable table on which you'll rest.

They may use incense and music to help you relax. Some practitioners use moxibustion, a technique where a small piece of herb is attached to the end of the needles and lit, much like incense. The heat from this travels down the needle into the meridian point to stimulate circulation.

Take a Hike

You may prefer a more active self-care approach to your relaxation. Many people find that doing something out in nature refreshes them. You could always take a hike out on a nature trail yourself. For something different, find a service that offers guides to take you out on an activity such as:

  • sea kayaking to view marine life
  • white-water rafting down a river
  • rock climbing on a scenic bluff
  • a guided hike on mountain trails to view wildflowers

You may discover that a physical activity refreshes you more than a quiet massage.

Do Your Self-Care Right

Don't fall into the thinking that by helping someone else move, work on their house or by staying late at work to help someone with their project is what recharges you. These efforts are draining and you need to refuel yourself by doing effective self-care that charges you back up so you can help the next person that needs a hand.
